About Us

What should I expect at my Medical Acupuncture Visit?

Before the Visit:

Because Dr. Fraley is a Medical Acupuncturist, he will want to know as much about you, as possible, BEFORE your first appointment.  The more information the doctor has, the better he will be able to treat you.  That is why we ask our patients to complete the Acupuncture New Patient Form, that is located in our Patient Portal.  It is a good idea to complete the other forms in the portal as well.  This will make your visit to the office go as smoothly as possible.  The portal is also useful for scheduling appointments, and securely communicating with Dr. Fraley.  You should check it out!

During the Visit:

As he is a Medical Doctor, Dr. Fraley will check your vital signs, and do a physical exam on your first visit.  He will also examine your tongue and perform pulse diagnosis.

It is best to plan on wearing loose fitting clothing to your appointment.  Most Acupuncture can be performed without the patient having to fully undress.  If needed, gowns and draping will be used, as well.

Dr. Fraley will then discuss with you the planned treatment.

During Acupuncture:

Acupuncture points are situated in all areas of the body.  Sometimes the appropriate points are far removed from the area of your pain.  Dr. Fraley will tell you the general site of the planned treatment and if you need to remove any clothing.  If appropriate, a gown, towel or sheet will be provided to preserve your modesty.

You lie on a padded table, or sit in a chair, for the treatment, which involves:

Needle insertion:  Acupuncture needles are very thin, so insertion usually causes little discomfort.  Between five and 20 needles are used in a typical treatment.  You may feel a mild aching sensation when a needle reaches the correct depth.

Needle manipulation:  Dr. Fraley may gently move or twirl the needles after placement or apply heat or mild electrical pulses to the needles (Electro Acupuncture.)

Needle removal:  In most cases, the needles remain in place for 20 minutes while you lie still and relax. There is usually no discomfort or bleeding when the needles are removed.

After Acupuncture:

Some people feel relaxed and others feel energized after an Acupuncture treatment. It is best to sit quietly for a few minutes, until you know how you will respond.

Humans are all different from each other.  In general, several treatments are needed to help most patients.

Some people have an immediate change in their symptoms.  Some people have a gradual improvement of symptoms.  Some people get worse, before they get better.  And some people do not respond until days to weeks after a series of treatments.

Follow-up Visits:

During a series of treatments, follow up visits are usually scheduled once or twice a week.  A series of treatments may last 2 - 6 weeks, depending on the severity of the initial problem.

During a follow-up visit, Dr. Fraley will ask questions to asses how you are responding to the treatment.  He will again do vital signs, and a brief exam.  And then he will determine whether to continue with the current treatment, or make changes.
